The area which comprises Seabrook found its beginnings in recorded history in 1832 when Ritson Morris, a native Virginian, obtained a league of land form the Mexican Government. A portion of that land was purchased by Seabrook W. Sydnor in 1895 and a plat was filed with the Harris County Courthouse the following year. In March 1903, the Seabrook Company of Houston filed a revised layout of the proposed Seabrook Townsite. The new town appealed to local farmers, fisherman and merchants and even a few seasonal residents.
In 1961, fearing annexation by Houston and La Porte, the local leadership initiated procedures and the City was incorporated. In 1964, a new bridge was built between the cities of Kemah and Seabrook and State Highway 146 was established as a four-lane thoroughfare. Sleepy beginnings of the City have given way to unprecedented growth and an estimated population over 10,000.
With a growing population, Seabrook is a combination of old and new. Many residents have lived in Seabrook 10 years or more. Seabrook offers new homes from $95,000 up in well-planned subdivisions. The quality of life is assured by zoning and up-to-date building codes.
The quality of life is enriched by its location. Steeped in the history and traditions of the Texas Gulf Coast and endowed with a mixture of recreational and commercial resources, Seabrook beckons visitors to stay a while or a lifetime. Seabrook is accessed by two state highways (NASA Parkway and State Highway 146) and is 7 miles from Interstate 45, and 20 miles from Interstate 10. A 30 minute drive will take you to Hobby Airport. Adequate utilities are available and the Southeast Harris County Economic Development Council will assist developers in obtaining economic aid and other grants and loans. Property and sales taxes are among the lowest in the Houston Metropolitan area.
Residents enjoy excellent schools for their children through the highly acclaimed Clear Creek Independent School District. CCISD is considered among the best public school systems in the State of Texas and nation. In addition, there are several universities and numerous technical schools within a thirty minute drive of Seabrook, including the University of Houston-Clear Lake.
Excellent health care is always in close proximity with St. John Hospital just down NASA Parkway in Nassau Bay and Clear Lake Regional Health Care Center in Webster.
Seabrook offers expansive parks. With ten parks consisting of seventy-eight acres, two boat ramps, two public pools and 900 foot salt water fishing pier, there is plentiful open space for family activities. For those who love fishing, boating and sailing, few communities can match Seabrook’s waterfront.
The City’s scale allows Seabrook’s police and fire protection to respond quickly in case of an emergency.
